Obituary of Harriett Hopf

Harriett was born in Baltimore, Maryland on January 22, 1918. She grew up in Frederick, MD and Norfolk, VA. She graduated from Maury High School in Norfolk, VA and worked at the Norfolk Naval Air Station during WWII in the payroll department. At the end of the depression she worked as a bank teller and at the dime store. In 1947 she lived in Germany for a short time. She moved back to the U.S and married George Walter Hopf on September 4th 1948. They had two daughters Marcia Hopf Livengood (Ed) and Rita Hopf Flygar (Ray) and three grandchildren Tamara and Eddie (Amber) Livengood and Mark (Ramona) Blackburn. Harriett worked as a school health room aide at Walter Johnson High School and Southlawn Middle School, both in Montgomery County, MD. She also worked as a substitute teacher for Montgomery County Schools, Kindergarten to 6th grade. Harriett and Walt had a cabin in Pennsylvania that they went to frequently with family. They also camped and visited 49 of the 50 states. Harriett loved animals and they had cats and dogs in the house. Harriett fed the birds, deer, raccoons, opossums and squirrels. The squirrels knew the sound of her car and would meet her in the driveway as she always had peanuts for them. Harriett spent many years volunteering her time. She was a longtime Girl Scout. She had two troops: A Senior Troop and a Brownie Troop. She volunteered 17 years at the Interfaith Clothing Store as well as Meals on Wheels. She was a Sunday School teacher at Norfolk Lutheran Church and Crusader Lutheran Church in Rockville. In her later years, Harriett managed the Rockville Senior Center Thrift Store until she was 90 years old.
